1/2 gallon of coolant a day is a HUGE leak in automobile terms and it should be very easy to find.
The first course of action is to place a pressure pump on the expansion tank and pump pressure into the cooling system. Lift up the car and look for leaks at all hoses, radiator and water pump.
If no external leaks are found, remove spark plugs and see if coolant is pooling up into one or more cylinders.
I don't really beleive that coolant is leaking into the cylinders/combustion chambers since that huge amount of coolant in a cylinder would most likely create misfire or at least very rough starting problems, especially when cold.
It might be a hose leaking while driving and the coolant is flying off under the car without leaving big evidence when standing still.
