Mine on our 03 Aero Wagon died yesterday. No warning, just an over night internal breakage. Volts were OK on ignition on, and down a bit with head lamps, but when starting, it would go wildly to 3 to 5 volts and the relays would dance and click. Sometimes it would deliver starting current, but most times not. As the DVM was connected to the battery post clamps and the voltage dropped there, one can rule out problems with flaky connections at the starter and starter solenoid. I also checked for voltage differences between posts and clamps and the post and engine to rule out problems of that nature.
I had a Sears's died hard battery do this at less than one year in the 80's and had one in a VW Passat Diesel do the same a few years ago, but it was perhaps 4 years old. I guess that I have not seen a battery decline from old age in a very long time... they are all having heart attacks.
I worked with a battery charger and after a while got it to start and did my banking at the drive-up window so I could leave the engine on, popped over to see how Dan's C900 project was going, engine running, then headed to George's in KCMO for a warranty replacement.
