I've recently completed a six fill-up experiment concerning octane/milage/price between 89 octane and 93 octane, and here are my results:
Three fill ups with 89 octane averaged 23.6 MPG. With an 18.5 gal tank that makes 436.6 miles per tank. At $2.93 9/10 per gallon, that's $54.37 for 18.5 gal tank full. 436.6 miles for $54.37 divided down equals 12.5 cents per mile.
Three fill ups with 93 octane averaged 25.1 MPG. 18.5 gal goes 464.35 miles. At $3.03 9/10 per gallon, that's $56.22 per tank. 464.35 miles for $56.22 divided down equals 12.1 cents per mile.
My conclusion is that paying 10 cents/gal more and gaining 1.5 MPG is actually cheaper per mile, not to mention better for the engine and better performance. Sounds like a win/win to me!
