All I know is that I would feel pretty stupid if I had an OnStar equipped car in which I did not pay a mere $17 per month ($200 per year for the basic Safety and Security package) and I or a member of my family was in a serious accident, got knocked unconscious and could not make an emergency call with a cell phone. OnStar would make that call automatically. It has already saved lives. The cellular coverage works well in some very remote areas, (an advantage over digital mobile phones). Think of it like insurance that you pay for, but hope to never have to use. It also helps track down stolen vehicles thanks to GPS.
If you pay $400 per year, you get the premium service in which they provide you with directions and information on establishments in the area. It may not be perfect yet, but it is not as distracting as navigation systems. I drove a 740i and almost hit the car in front of me while I was looking down programming in a destination.
Just some things to think about,
Atul
