George K's message below covers a lot of good ground, I'll just add a few things.

This is not a drastic makeover, it's a freshening. If you liked the previous 9-5, you'll still like this one, but it's not going to win converts who tried 9-5s before and didn't like them. I think of my previous 9-5 ('02 Linear premium package) as a big, simple, friendly lab named Olaf; this new model is more like his sister Giselle who went into town and had some work done.

The most obvious changes are to the exterior, specifically the front and rear ends. This is not a car you want to order off the boat sight unseen; the changes to the rear are minimal, but the front end ... that's a whole different story. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I just shake my head; a lot depends on your angle of approach. I realized the other day in a parking lot it's a lot like an Acura TL or a new Civic.

Since the hard points in the car haven't changed, the dimensions of the interior are the same - armrests, pedals, stalks, steering wheel, seats are all in the same place. The dash is the same shape and is now one color; previously I had tan leather seats and a half-tan dash. The new dash seems to retain heat a lot more. The instrument cluster and the wheel seem to come from the 9-3; I think the new style of gauges is too precious and fussy, even though all the info is the same. The SID now lives near the odo, at the bottom of the speedo. I miss having the time and temp right next to each other, since the clock lives in the radio. All the SID functions are controlled by buttons on the steering wheel, which unfortunately are not illuminated.

More later.
