Can you advise on your driving habits (short commutes verses longer drives), general geographical area (colder northern climate verses more moderate southern climate), type of oil, any information that may be of benefit to the rest of us? How long have you had the car? 114k miles in 7 years, a tad over 16k per year - average. Do you know the driving habits and maintenace history of the previous owner?
Looking at the sludge problem I am inclined to incorporate an oil pressure gauge. Alternately, if I can find a reliable pressure switch I may incorporate an idiot light that will give advance notice at say 15 psi. Relying on what Saab as given us seems to be a bit of a crap shoot at best. Also, I am inclined to probe into the oil pan with a borescope in an attempt to evaluate the presence of sludge.
My typical commute is 20 miles in "moderate" conditions, usual run times are about 30 minutes with some highway driving so I am reasonable sure the oil is getting to temperature. Also, I change oil every 3-3.5k and use only Saab filters. The oil of choice is Mobil 1 5W-30.
I hope your damage is minimal and easily corrected.
Good luck!
