I'm guessing Polaris is contracted to do some analysis for the oilmedic folks. I ordered the Saab specific test kit from Oilmedic.com.
I spent some time on the phone with the Polaris folks today to gather more info. They said they have been testing a lot of Saabs lately (go figure). The engineer I spoke with has a personal opinion that sounds pretty reasonable to me. He thinks the piston rings are letting too much fuel/gasses into the oil, which ruins the viscosity eventually, causing all sorts of problems that we read about on the forums, like sludge, dead turbos, ruined engines. It's just a hunch, but the results of this test show fuel is coming from somewhere, and also that 7,000 mile oil change intervals are too long, at least for my car, with this particular oil.
Regardless of the problem, a good approach is to test multiple times with the same oil type and the same driving conditions, but at different intervals, eg. 7,000, 5,000, 4,000 miles. Comparing these three results will show how long the tested oil can last before the fuel cntamination issue reduces viscosity to an unacceptable level. Then you know when to change the oil for maximum value, assuming you stick with that brand and that viscosity, to keep your fragile baby alive.
The assumption, of course, is that the fuel contamination issue is the result of a design flaw for this engine, and not some other serviceable problem that would result in fuel ingress and viscosity problems.
