Like the center console key ignition location, the 9-5 cupholder is elegantly unique to Saab. Unfortunately, the cupholder was made more for the styrofoam, paper or plastic type of drinking cup, and not the heavier insulated plastic and/or metal beverage toting jugs we are all too fond of these days. Mine fell victim to getting tangled up with my wife's purse strap and became the spinning ring whirlagig others talk about. I pressed my luck by only partially dissassembling the dash and bending it out just enough to use a torx screw bit held with mini Channelock pliers to unscrew the 2 backside mounting screws that hold the assembly to my 1999 9-5 woodgrain dash panel.

When the cupholder fails and the cup ring goes into unrestricted spin mode, it's likely that small double knobbed plastic guide piece that mounts to the shaft of the cupholder ring has either slipped off the shaft or, as in my case, split on one side from the overtorqueing. The knobs follow curved slots in the cupholder case, producing the desired vertical to horizontal 90 degree depoyment spin of the ring. Excess torque from a too big beverage or snagging the cup ring causes the guide piece which is restrained by the cupholder case slots to either pop off whole or crack.

Although I have yet to put my cupholder back in place, I hope my epoxy and braided fishing line lashing repair of the the cracked piece will work. And for the future...No more supersize drinks or dangerous purse maneouvres allowed please..!!
