Bob,
Leather can last a long time if properly cared for. I guess one could argue that cloth seating requires less maintenance.
Just wondering-do you have a "moral objection" to leather seats? You're not a PETA kind of guy, are ya (nothing wrong with that, mind you)? Why would you even consider buying a car (Audi or BMW) with "leatherette" (fancy word for vinyl) upholstery? The steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake in those cars would be wrapped in dead moo-cow hide, anyway. ;-)
For me personally-if I'm spending anything north of of say, $34k for a car, I expect that leather seats better be standard. And for Audi ('02 A6 avant base MSRP $38,350) and BMW ('02 525i sportwagon base MSRP $37,750), you'll spend almost $4k more than a '02 9-5 wagon Linear ($34,695) for the privilege of having that "glorified" vinyl seating. To me, THAT'S immoral (or rather, criminal).
Go with leather. Make sure those poor moo-cows didn't die in vain....
