I bottomed out on my 2003 aero and started a leak all around that seam and they had to do just what you said: $1200, no warranty on that hit. But how do you know that that is not the original sealant? (your last q--yes.If the leak is slow. locate the top and side check plugs, figure out how to make a"dipstick" to check the elevl from time to time (use the side check plug to fill it, then make the dipstick). Keep adding oil (use the right stuff). Probably take five years to use up $1200, which is what i thought afterward i should have done. But that's the same work as a new clutch, so you could wait for that to happen, just keep watching the oil.
You can also jusge the leak by looking under after parking.
