Saab calls this transmission the "sentronic" tranny. It was first available in 2003, and is simply an added feature and doesnt differ from the 2002 from a hardware/mechanical standpoint. The tranny was changed from a 4 speed auto to a 5 speed auto in 2002, and the manual shift capability was brought in for the 2003 model year. You simply bring the shifter down into "M" to activate the paddles on the steering wheel. The left paddle is to downshift, while the right paddle is to upshift. I believe "L" selects first gear. Pressing the "W" button will start the car out in 3rd gear to optimize snow traction. So, there is no reason why the sentronic tranny should be any less reliable than the "plain" auto found in the 2002's. The 9-5 has always had a very dependable automatic transmission. Check out my site on my car, as I have a couple pics of the paddle shifters.
