Well, I know of several cases where the owner brought in an oil sample which showed a problem, and head gaskets were replaced under warranty after checking it out (sample showed coolant in oil).
Know of a front-end loader, still under warranty, being used by a landscaper. Oil sample showed abnormal wear, probably due to bad bearing. Dealer faxed a copy of sample to manufacturer, and within 15 minutes had authorization to tear down and examine. There were no obvious problems, but upon teardown a bearing was found to be improperly seated.
Know of a boat where owner took sample of new boat before putting it away for the season. Oil analysis showed excessive water in oil. Dealer said it was condensation. Owner send copies of report to engine and boat manufacturers--within 10 days, dealer called to pick up boat. Had a miscast head, and would have cost a bundle once out of warranty.
