Because we all want cheap, cheap and cheap.

Everyone (including car makers) wants the lowest price on everything.

At some point that's what you get, the lowest price.
That doesn't mean you get the best possible quality and life span, only the lowest price.

We are never going to find out if Saab had too low specs on the parts inside the IDM or if any of the suppliers of those itty bitty parts made them below spec or what.

We do know that the red cassette last longer than the black and it wasn't that much hallaballoo about them failing until the black ones came along dropping dead left and right when still under warranty.

So it looks like Saab or the manufacturer of one of the itty bitty parts changed the specs on something (probably to lower the cost of it) and it turned out to be just too cheap.
