On the side of the key, next to the "lock" button, you will find a little hole. You would think that inserting a paper clip in that hole would release the back. However, in my experience, the little tab that the paper clip must depress is much too stiff to open the remote that way.
Instead, you can insert a small screwdriver between the side and back of the key, next to the hole, and pry in the same direction that the paper clip would be pushing. It actually comes out pretty easily, and once you see what's in there, you'll know exactly what to do next time.
Disclaimer: If you pry too hard and break the tab on the key back, I've heard that the dealer will charge about $18 for a new back.
While you're inside, you might as well replace the battery. The battery I use is a Panasonic CR1632. Outside the dealer, I couldn't find it locally, so I bought 5 for $6 (shipped) from eBay.
The dealer will have to order the new key shaft based on your car's VIN, and then program the car to recognize the remote you bought from eBay. When going to the dealer for programming, make sure to take all the remotes, as the car has to be programmed for all of them at the same time, even the old ones it already knows about.
Best regards,
Dave
