Well... I am only 8 measly kilometers away from being out of extended warranty coverage on mt 1999 9-5 SE V6. I am very glad I got the coverage 48,000 km ago in May 2003, when I bought the car at the only Saab dealer here in Winnipeg.
Just today, I was at the dealer to have them install a new SID unit identifed as faulty last week (4 rows of pixels out) and thankfully covered by the warranty. Otherwise the bill would have been about $700 Cdn. Altogether, I estimate the items I had done under warranty (front badge peeling, leaky oil pan, both headlamp wiper motors, ACC control unit, AC condenser, both sway-bar links, and now the SID) would have cost more than triple the warranty price. This was a GM top line extended no-deductible warranty covering pretty much everything but brakes and exhaust. I got a 50% break on the warranty at purchase due to very confusing status of remaing factory warranty. At offer stage, I was told I had full factory coverage for a while, When the offer came back accepted by the manager, I was told the warranty was actually expired due to confusion about the in-service date. I immediately withdrew the offer saying I wouldn't buy the car without some coverage. A few panicked sentences later, I accepted the 4 year or 48,000 km extended coverage for only $1300 Cdn.
As I've said here before, this BB is itself worth much to all of us Saab owners. I have saved much cash and heartache with the valuable collective knowledge of participants. Even without warranty, I am ready to DIY lots of faults discussed here... should I ever experience bad DIC, ACC Code 8, ABS control failure, I am ready! Even a heads-up from member albanysaab about a V6 muffler on eBay saved me hundreds. Another member LesH tipped me off to some giveaway steel rims for snow tires from generous member J Boyce in Bismarck ND which only cost me $65 shipping.
Thanks to this community. I am pleased to contribute whenever I can to such a mature and thoughtful group.
Happy Saabing all,
Reg
