I've done this kind of thing on various Saabs I've owned. The problem is the location of the switch makes it likely that it will collect spilt coffee, soda, donut crumbs or what ever else you and yours eat in your car.
What I've done is clean out the switch by carefully prying apart the two halves of the switch box assembly and cleaning all the little copper contact pieces with an electronics cleaner spray you can get from Radio Shack. You have to work a little screwdriver in the tabs holding the halves together and then be very careful when you pull the halves apart that the contact pieces inside don't fall out. If any do fall out, with a little study you can figure out how they go back. After you clean each contact point and reassemble be careful the pieces don't move out of position when you snap the assembly back together. With a little patience you can do it.
