I happen to use my Aero for my work and carry a full trunkoad of tools and parts in order to provide field service on medical lasers. When I arrived at a customer site today my trunk would not open! The door button would not activate the lock mechanism, nor would the remote, but I did get the beeps and flashes. I had to get my tools out somehow though.
I had to go through the hassle of unloading most of my trunk from the rear seat foldown area just so I could crawl in to unlatch the manual release. What brilliant Saab engineer decided to eliminate an outside keyed lock? Well, by now I am all hot and sweaty and now it is begining to rain! I quickly reloaded the trunk and grabbed my tools and ran into the customers office just in time.
When I finished it was still pouring rain, and since I still couldn't open the trunk, I had to throw my tools and laptop case into the back seat. When I got home, I started troubleshooting, and the typical close visual inspection did not reveal anything, so I then went to my friends at Saabnet for advice. A simple search led me to posts that directed me to inspect the wiring harness between the trunk lid and the car. After pulling back the rubber flexhose on the trunk side of the harness......"voilla" there it was.....a broken wire and another just about to break.
I soldered and insulated the splices and then used viynl tape to insulate the wire bundle from the hard plastic elbow fitting that was rubbing the wires. Now I am back in business and without too much lost time and no lost money! Thanks for the helpful posts everyone.
Just to offer something in return, I wanted to share my latest tire experience with you all. My Aero has 118k on it and I have been through several dissapointing tire choices and early inside edge wear. I am on my second set of Kumho ASX's but with a revised tire management plan, I am getting much better wear and tear now. I now do the modified-cross rotation every 3k(once a month)and set the cold tire pressure at 37psi all around. So far, after 17k, even wear and no cupping yet! Still quiet and smooth too. Looks like I should at least get another 10k out of them, which is better than my last set, whcih I had to replace at about 17k (5k rotation with 42psi). These tires are the best for the money so far.
Happy trails,
ChuckH
