subtle whine - pulleys Posted by bobc [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
please excuse my subtle whining about pulleys ...
I just replaced the serp belt and pulleys this weekend as part of my 60k service. I planned on replacing pulleys #1, 2 and 6 in this diagram from thesaabsite:
http://www.thesaabsite.com/shop/catimages/top/95beltsetup4cyl1.jpg
a few things:
1 - the OE replacement pulleys were just like the original. plastic, and the bearings were small and not very robust looking. I guess that is to be expected but I would have been happy if Saab had noticed the weakness and improved the part after all these years.
2 - the 6mm hex bolt tht holds #2 pulley is really hard to get to, at least I was not successful. I even cut down a hex wrench as recomended on fixmysaab.com. it is VERY tight in there, I just could not get enough bite. So I left the old pulley and will try again at 120k.
any tips on getting at that bolt? I removed the motor mount and now thinking about it I wonder if I could have pivitoed the engine up to get more clearance ...
Anyway, just wondering, what IS the failure mode of these pulleys? I assumed it was the the plastic that breaks. or maybe the bearing starts to fail and the additional heat causes the plastic to crack and fail?
Since these pulleys are a point of failure, it would be nice if we could replace them with high quality parts rather than the usual mediocre GM quality parts.
Is there any place to get high quality, long lasting versions of these pulleys?
thanks
