Does anyone know where to purchase a replacement fiber optic ribbon cable that will replace the broken fiber optic strands that cause the LED failure on these Saab SID's? When new my SID front glass plate would be extreemly hot. Now that the fiber optics aren't channeling the light all the way to the end of the cable the glass is cool. How does this work? Here is a crude example using a keybord for symbols.
Halogen Light <
Fiber optic ribbon cable with connector on each end |=========|
Fiber rods seen on the SID display front :
<|============|:
The heat from the halogen light makes the fiber optic strands in the ribbon cable, and the light pick up rods (you see the ends of these on the SID display) brittle. The HVAC system and the seasons increase and decrease the amount of heat on the ribbon cable fiber optics. The fibers crystallize and break. The break stops the transfer of light from to the display. When one fiber fails the others will soon follow. Replacement fiber optic ribbon cables and displays replacements are available. This type of failure happens in industural control panel displays often.
