I may be able to shed some light on this, having owned both a base 9-3 and a base 9-5. I purchased a base 9-3 brand new in 1999, and had pretty much 53,000 trouble-free miles over 6+ years. Trouble free, that is until some 24-year old punk on his cell phone and late to his date blew through his red light and T-boned me, totalling the car.

Remembering just how safe Saabs are (major car accidents really change your perspective/priorities on things like that), I promptly took my payout and shopped only Saabs for a replacement and I purchased a 1999 base 9-5 2.3 LPT with 72,000 miles on it. Both my 9-3 and 9-5 are 1999 models, and even though the 9-5 has about 20,000 more miles and is older (I found out from the VIN that it was actually manufactured in 1998), it is a more solid, much better screwed-together car. Positives and negatives are really subjective-- the 9-5 is definitely larger, and depending on the engine/year/trim level it will have either more or less hp than the 9-3. I'm noticing better handling in the 9-5, despite all-season tires (Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S), than my 9-3 with performance summer tires (Nokian Z's). For reliability and problem area discussions of both models, the comments on this BB will prove invaluable. I myself have been advised to replace my DIC by an independent Saab mechanic, which will run anywheres from about $240 to $500 depending how resourceful and handy you are. I love my 9-5 now, and I dearly loved my 9-3-- providing you get a car that's been taken care of and has all the proper records, I think you'll do great.
