I'm sure that this thread will turn into a CR bashfest, and as a frequent defender of CR, what can I do to explain their recommendations?
1999: first year of new model, now 7+ years old, any 7-yr old car is going to start needing things. If you can pull service history, and see that typical things (DI, throttle body, turbo, rear struts, SID, muffler) have already been replaced, if the price is right, it's still a great car.
2001: why different than 2000? Could be that just very minor difference in problem reporting resulted in the two placing differently. Maybe more xenons on the 2001? I realize that most consider headlight bulbs normal maintenance, not the type of thing to be reported as problem. But I think that most xenon's were advertised as "lasting forever", and when they need replacing after a couple of years, and the dealer charges over $300 for a pair, ouch.
good luck with your search, and although I don't have a V-6, they don't seem more problematic than 4's, based upon my experiences on this board.
