As a supplier to the automotive industry for my entire career, please allow me to make one suggestion and hopefully educate some people as to what really goes on.

Windshield glass is safety glass (or laminated), meaning that there are actually 2 sheets of glass separated by a plastic film in between. This setup, in case of an accident, retains the small broken pieces of glass in the plastic film, so it cannot scatter and injure an occupant. Great idea.

The total thickness (Glass + Film + Glass) of the safety glass is typically the same. In Europe, they typically make the outside sheet of glass thicker (usually 70% of total thickness) than the inside layer. This makes this outer layer stronger and more resistant to breaks or chips.

In the US, they make the layers of equal thickness, which is why you see a crack or star in every other windshield of a US vehicle. Why? ... it costs less.

Please do one thing, make certain that you replace your windshield with the OEM glass, so you don't prematurely end up in the same situation.

Also, European glass makers add acoustic materials to the plastic film middle-layer, which lowers the noise level inside your car.

It all comes down to $. Who wants to make a good/great car and who doesn't have a problem with mediocrity.
