I just bought a 2001 9-5 SE V6 wagon 5 days ago with 54,500 miles on the odometer. No more than 300 miles after purchase of the vehicle the check engine light comes on. So I called the local dealership & asked if they had any any service history on this car. The service advisor takes the VIN# then says they have the history, then he pauses and under his breath gasps "wow". He faxed me the history...now I know why he said that.

Here's the rundown of parts replaced on the car:
mm/yy Part# Failed Part
07/03 83417 Lock, Rear Door
10/03 35119 Halogen Lamp, Headlights
12/03 36920 Telephone Unit
12/03 44531 ECM
12/03 36920 Telephone Unit
01/04 25451 Three Way Cat. Conv
01/04 25451 Three Way Cat. Conv (replaced again after 250 miles)
02/04 25446 O2 Sensor After Cat Conv
02/04 84210 Emblems
05/04 36457 Switch, Seat Memory Function
08/04 85996 Cup Holder
11/04 24810 ECM
11/04 35149 Bulb Rear
03/05 29112 Turbocharger
03/05 38172 Cover Glass
03/05 36366 Level Sensor, Washer Fluid
04/05 38161 Bulb Socket/Bulb
12/05 31111 Battery

01/06 29112 Turbocharger
01/06 25441 O2 Sensor
02/06 24810 ECM
05/06 25441 O2 Sensor
05/06 87080 Microprocessor
05/06 38138 SID

No Warranty on this car now, so any repairs would be out of my pocket. I had the CEL scanned at advanced auto parts, it's a p0420 AGAIN.

Any ideas as to what the heck the problem could be? Here are all of the error codes I can parse out of the problem descriptions starting from newest to oldest:

p0420
p0420
p0420
p0133
p0420
Notes say "code for three way cat malfunction" but don't give code
p0420
p0420
p1300
p1251
p1261

They've already replaced damn near every part of the emissions system at least once most of them twice. I've been trying to apply some logic to this situation. The car threw a p1300 random misfire code first. According to the notes, they never replaced any parts at that time, they just cleared the code, reset the limp home solenoid, and the problem never reappeared. However soon after that, the car has had this persistant p0420 problem. Is it possible that I have a bad DIC in this car & it malfunctioning just slightly enough that something is being blown into the cat, but not enough for it to misfire or throw other codes?

Also, I need to find a good independant mechanic near Fort Atkinson, WI. If anyone knows of someone, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for your help! Justin
