the SID itself is actually quite robust, but the failure point is a ribbon cable, its connection to the board is a weird glue/solder that fails based on some function of (time,vibration,temp,humidity).
you can revive a bad SID by "ironing" the connection. I have revived my SID numerous times like that. its a 15 minute investment.
the new SIDs have the same crappy connection. there has been no improvement over all these years. its a shame.
There is a fellow who advertises on the Parts classified who will fix your SID.
