Written technically as 9 to the 5th power, or 9 ti the 3rd power, superscript, but most often written as 9-5 and 9-3.
A little history, Saabs model numbers all started with 9's, as in model 92 (no superscript) as in ninety-two, 93 95, 96, 97 and 99. After the model 99 what to do? Well let's go to a model 900 starting in 1979, and the larger car introduced in 1986 was the 9000, nine-hundred and nine-thousand. Now comes 1998 and a new large car, what to call it? Gotta' pay homage to the "nines" so 9000 becane the 9-5 and the nine-hundreds became nine threes. I think this is close enough to the BMW system 3 series and 5 series, Saab's biggest perceived competitor, the 3 Series (325, 330) competes with the 9-3 and the 5 Series (525, 530, 545) competes with the 9-5.
