I've had a flat in both my wagon and my sedan...

And the spare fits in the floor in both. The wagon has the extra room between the wood floor and the little carpet thing to allow for expansion. The normal place to put the flat tire is back in the spare hole, so I have tried it on both. The spare is narrower, so on the sedan the trunk floor sticks up a little, so you lose a slight bit of cargo space. On the wagon you don't. They planned for this and gave some expansion room. It's where my triangle is stored now. I don't have sliding load floor, so I don't know if that takes up any of the space.
I've been planning on getting full sized spares for both, after having three flats between the two cars in two years.
