It might not be the best way in the world, but I put on the parking break, put, I think they are called wheel chucks, behind the rear wheels then do the passenger side then the drivers side. I have been doing it this way since i was 16 and has yet to fail me so I stay with it. If I am not using the jack I lower the car onto the stand but put the jack back up to, not supporting the car but almost as a fail safe because i have had a jack stand fail on me and it saved my life. but since you are not going to be under the car it should not be a problem. I just recently bought ramps but they don't seem high enough when I crawl under but it might be perfect for supporting a motor. they were only 25 at auto zone. but I use the fail safe jack for that too.
