Yet the engine control unit (ECU) is the first thing dealers always want to replace. Maybe because it costs $1000 and takes five minutes to do.
My ancient Nissan pickup had an ongoing issue with hesitation away from a light. Dealer swapped in new ECU to diagnose problem - problem went away, and they quoted me $900 for new ECU (approx 1/4 the value of truck). I said no, dealer put old ECU back in, problem never came back... apparently the connection at the ECU was at fault.
Is there an auto wrecker nearby that could sell you an ECU that could be swapped in to see if it fixes the problem (alternatively, will the dealer swap in a new ECU and let you drive it a couple weeks to ensure the problem is gone?)
Is another opinion (dealer/indy) available to you?
Did they turn OFF the CEL when the work was done - it doesn't go off on its own! How long did it take to come back on?
Did they use the correct plugs (non-platinum NGK BCPR6ES work fine at about $10 for a set of four)?
Did the replace the DIC under the recall (if your car is covered) with the latest version (3.7) and update the engine computer (ECU) with the correct, new software that can diagnose these problems better?
Change gas stations. ONLY use good name brand premium (don't know where you are so can't suggest a brand - around here Shell V-Power is about the best but we can only get 91 octane).
Alternatively, if you're like me, you'd use this as an excuse to get an upgraded high performance ECU from one of the site sponsors.
