Do a search on this BB for "PCV." The 4 cylinder has lots of problems with the PCV system. PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation and if there is an issue with this system (a clog or a stuck valve) back pressure builds up in the crankcase and oil does not drain from the turbocharger so it fills with oil which burns off when you start the car. This might also explain the hesitation from a stop. If you're any good at DIY'ing check out the picture below and get to the valve circled in red. Take it off, making sure you remember which way it's on there, and blow air in with your mouth through both ends. I wouldn't advise sucking the air in because it left a pretty foul oily taste in my mouth. bleh. Air should be able to move one way through the valve. If the valve is working alright do a search for PCV or take it somewhere.
