Interior smells of gas under heavy acceleration.

Okay, the back-story is as follows.

My car was in the body shop and I got a call from them saying I was leaking large amounts of gasoline from the top of the tank. So I had it towed to my house and popped open the access hole beneath the rear seat. There's the problem, one of the two main lines in and/or out, not sure which, had broken loose from the snap-in arm, and actually broken the arm itself. So rather that spend $450+ on a new sending unit assembly just to fix such a small part, I rigged a fine brace to hold both hoses in place. All seemed well.

But now,
under hard acceleration, seemingly more-so at higher speeds, I get strong gasoline fumes in the cabin. Also, on more that one occasion, my power was jumpy, almost felt like a clutch going bad under hard acceleration. When I look at the sending unit/fuel assembly, everything is dry, no leaks, no visible problems, although the fumes are very strong.

SO,
did I somehow override some function of that hose by bracing it the way I have? What else could be going on here? Need I spend the $450 to replace the whole deal? ANY help would be appreciated. Thank you and take care.
