Try to replace the gear selector switch and the problems might go away.
Now when the winter sets in with colder temperature is when we see a rash of switch failures.
Technically, driving with a bad gear selector switch might do more damage to transmission if the transmission is allowed to operate in limp home mode too much.
It will overheat and damage the fluid and subsequently the clutches inside.
