Yikes! Better Add Insulation Now or Change That Cable

That's way too much exposed copper wire filaments!! You're asking for corrosion to just keep on creeping back into the insulation jacket where it will do permanent damage. My tractor-like non-turbo 1993 Saab 900 developed an electricial "brown out" condition when I stepped on the brakes. The lights would dim and the radio would shut off. It took forever to diagnose, looking everywhere for bad grounding and loose connections. Luckily SaabNet had the answer and I was off to the local auto parts store for a new lug connector and Home Depot for some 3/0 house wiring cable. Certainly, the theory and practicality is that the many stranded original cable has more surface area to carry higher current and greater flexibility to route under the hood, but the hidden corrosion made quick work of the individual copper strands and greatly reduced the current capacity of the cable. You should consider some sort of heat shrink tubing or plastic dip to get those exposed strands covered up to the battery terminal clamp.
Best of luck,
Kirk D.
