Other than keeping your tires on the firm side, it has been my experience that MPG is most dependent on my driving style. When I am driving in 'ZEN mode', accelerating gradually, braking early and keeping my speed down to the posted limit, I find that I get 3-4 MPG better than when I am in a hurry. I found this with my '93 Volvo 850 5sp and also now with my '01 9-5 Aero Wagon 5sp. My workday commute is 92 miles round trip, 75 miles on crowded interstates and the rest on local roads with only a few light or stop signs. I found that my MPG ranged from 26.5 to 30 with regular gas in the 850 and after about 7K miles in the Aero, between 25.5 and 29 on 93 octane.
If your driving is more local, then I would expect that with more braking and accelerating, the 'stress-less' aproach would even pay more dividends. However your milage range would be lower, since you are disapating the kenetic energy, that you paid for during acceleration, every time you apply the brake.
I hope this helps.
