Weird door lock issue

The driver's side door lock in my new to me 2000 Aero doesn't go up and down when I press the alarm, or the central lock, unlock button, which makes me think that the actuator is shot. However, when I use the interior handle to open the door, nothing will happen if the door is locked. Is it possible that the handle and door lock became disconnected?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff
