There is a difference..... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Yes.......HID lights on a pre-facelift car, Brian, Fri, 17 Nov 2006 19:31:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
....between a H7 incadescent bulb and a Xenon bulb.
The H7 incadescent bulb requires 12VDC and consumes 55 watts of power. The Xenon bulb requires a ballast to step up the applied voltage substantially and consumes only half the wattage. The Xenon bulb doesn't have a filament that is heated up; rather an electric arc flows through and excites the xenon gas which glows as a result. Light output is much whiter and 2-3 times brighter. Bulb life is many times longer than an incandescent bulb.
Auto manufacturers offering xenon lights as an option are charging a few hundred dollars or more. True xenon bulbs run around $100 a piece (or more if you insist on buying them from a dealer). They will not operate as a replacement for an incadescent H7 bulb, and come in 2 standard designations, D2S and D2R.
An HID xenon headlight conversion kit includes ballasts, xenon bulbs, and wiring. Pricing is generally in the $400 - $600 range.
$18 buys you an incadescent H7 bulb tinted blue...with the same light output as a non-tinted H7.
