The gear selector switch is located on top of the tranny. If you look under the hood, you can see the shift cable attaches to it. When that switch starts to fail, it sends inproper info to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and sets a code (P0705 if I recall). That is one of the most likely causes of the light, but it could also be one of the sensors or a shift valve problem.

The check engine light (MIL) comes on because when a transmission fault occurs, it usually means the transmission is not functioning 100%. That means that there may be some emmissions related issues (such as incorrect shift maps), so the MIL, by Federal law, has to come on too. When the transmission problem is fixed, the codes will be cleared and all will be ok.

You should get it checked out as soon as possible
