I've been down this road recently.
I had a '98 9000CSE 5-speed with about 210,000 miles on it. I keep cars until they are ten years old, but lately I was racking up miles more quickly than usual. I'd put $3,000 in the car for "extra repairs" in 2005 in my effort to keep it, and I was around $1,000 in 2006. In August, I spoke to my independent Saab/Volvo dealer (and separately, to two of his mechanics), and as good as the 9000 design is, they were in agreement that my 9000 would be considerably more expensive to maintain than a 9-5 wagon. I delayed my decision. A month later, the 9000 was rammed from the rear and totaled for $6,100. I put that towards the $17,000 I paid for the 2002 9-5 Linear wagon 5-speed (43,000 mi) that I was considereing in August, including a 6-month warranty, a fresh set of Conti Contacts and a new turbo. I also bought an extended drivetrain warranty which I was told I'd probably break even on - based on typical 9-5 needs.
This is merely anecdotal and does not reflect the economy of all 9000 to 9-5 moves, but I think spending $2,000 - $4,000 on a 9000 today does not make good financial sense if you can get a fair deal on a more current 9-5. My 9000 was a great car (I had two of them), and in many ways greater than the 9-5, but the time had come for it to go. The four grand I put into my 9000 over 18 months was a wash, because the purchase price of an '02 wagon went down by about $3,000 - $4,000 over the same period.
Good luck.
Fred
