I have been an automotive electronic engineer for the past 20 some years, and sandpaper is the absolute worst thing to use on electrical contacts!! This removes all plating on the contacts and exposes more surface area to the elements to corrode. Generally, all that is needed to clean electrical contacts like this is the eraser from your kid's #2 school pencil. It's slightly abrasive, but will not harm the contact.
