Nut on the top bayonet mount is the worst part.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: install new rear shocks - how to?, K. Daehnke, Fri, 8 Dec 2006 20:47:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Use liberal amounts of penetrating solvent and wire brush all the rust off the threads before you start removing the top nut. I tried to eliminate these steps, snapped off the small flats on the stem end, and then had to take it to a shop with an impact wrench to get the shocks out of their cage.
The Saab brand shocks made by Sach are gas charged. If you use OEM or Sach brand replacement shocks, you will have to compress the shock to shorten it so that you can refit it in the car. I did this by placing a block of hardwood atop a second jack, placing this jack against the lower shock eye after the shock cage was reinstalled in the car, using this jack to compress the shock, and then carefully tapping the shock eye into position with a small hammer. You can easily crossthread the lower shock mounting bolt if you attempt to use this bolt only to pull the eye into correct position!
Those who have replaced their shocks with Bilsteins have not experienced this nightmare! Might be the best reason yet to use Bilstein shocks as replacements.
Good luck!
