Totally agree with jimbobjoe. I spent 16+ years with Allison Transmission (GM Powertrain) doing electronic integration work. One large project was electronically sensing trans fluid level. If the fluid level is too high, you get the frothing effect that jimbobjoe described. This essentially takes an incompressible fluid (trans oil) and makes it VERY compressible. In turn, the system cannot properly apply/unapply clutches. Fail-safe modes dictate that the engine spins against an 'open' trans, giving delayed shifts and shift flare. However you do it, get the fluid level back to where it needs to be.
