The clip was in the proper position, and not bent away from the hose, once the hose was pushed back in. It was centered above the fuel line the same way as the black return line is. I've got some "before wiring" photos but I won't bother posting.
I've only had the car 20K miles and so I can't comment on full history. The car condition is good and it appears well-cared for, better than the totaled 2000 9-5 wagon it replaces, no sign of any work underneath, any accident damage, etc. Pretty obviously always garaged, too.
Right before the first time the clip fell off it had a new cat installed at the dealer under warranty due to "operating below efficiency" codes.
I can't imagine how the line can come off now that I've wired it and once I put the 9-3 clip on, but I couldn't imagine how it could come off before this happened, either.
