Was replacing the rear axle earlier this year the final fix? I followed plenty of your posts until about March when you reported axle and bushing replacement.
>>> Yes and no. Yes, because the alignment came to within spec and the tires are wearing properly. No, because I still think that when fully loaded the subframe could flex out of shape again (as far as I know the new part is identical to the old one, but I haven’t been able to confirm this). Yes, for now it is fixed.
Are the terms axle and subframe used interchangeably? Not a true axle as I think about it but the large stamped piece from the frame to the hub, one for each side. Correct?
>>> I don't think axle and subframe are interchangeable. This is clearly the subframe, located in the center of the car between the rear hubs. This is not the stays or longitudinal links. Saab calls the subframe the rear axle because the entire system of subframe, stays, links, etc. takes the place of what would have been a rear axle. I am calling the subframe part 1/1a in the picture. The EPC calls this the rear axle. The PNs are in an earlier post. I don't know if those PNs are correct for your vehicle.
My rear camber is currently -2.2 each side and I hope to skip to the correct fix first time since this will be my money.
>>> Don't jump the gun. It could be bad shocks or bad springs. Has your cars ride height been lowered? Do you use the car in a loaded state for extended periods of time/distance?
I would not fully pay for the subframe without seeing if Saab will cover something towards it. A subframe should never fail unless it is involved in an accident, extremely overloaded, or defective in manufacture/design/both. Just tell Saab their engineers know of this and reported that a non-trivial number of subframes have been changed and that this is a known issue on some 9-5s. See what they say. My guess is they will cover the parts only and only if a dealer tells them this is what is needed. Maybe you should push for them to cover labor since the part is only about $225 plus some bushings. Ask your dealer how many hours labor is involved. Mine told me it was a lot of work.
Good luck.
