I just had the breaking clip of death on the passenger side arm on my '99 9-5 sunroof built-in wind deflector. after reading various helpful posts on solutions, I decided to attempt to just remove mine all together. I never liked the added noise it made when roof was open anyway. let's see. deflecting wind MAKES NOISE!! anyway, most of my open sunroof driving is around town at low speeds no no issues with buffeting or too much wind coming in. now I have nice quiet sunroof. no wind noise!

although, I am still PO'd that Saab wanted $200 for entire deflector replacement kit rather than sell just the arms (esp since they KNOW all these clips on the arms are breaking)

I never got complete clear instructions from any posts but pieced them together with ideas and went for it on my own this weekend. I hope this helps someone else out and is why I am posting it. I like to give back once in a while! this is what I did. I think I could re-install it or new one if needed as I didnt do anything permanent but it wouldn't be a load of fun!!

(1) disconnect arms from deflector:
small round metal pin clip easily slides off metal rod where side arm connects to deflector. then remove rod.

(2) remove remaining arm plastic clip or remains of a broken one:
carefully pry clip where fits into slot of opening casing. then pry the larger portion of plastic slip using screwdriver from (u-shaped part) the wall of the housing. it's just in there with friction and a few dibits on backside.

(3) remove deflector:
use large pliers to squeeze (outer left-right protrusions) plastic insert clips from spring/mounts to the deflector itself. then the deflector will slide right off of these mounts (leaving the springs and a plastic mount piece that connected to the deflector). the plastic connector to which I refer pivots on the same rod as the springs.

(4) remove springs:
since the springs always push up, blocking the sunroof from closing, I removed the springs as well. (someone else suggested placing a rubber hose in there to prevent the springs from pushing up. that may work but I wanted more permanent solution). use small screwdriver to push outer portion of spring over a small holding notch in sidewall (only need to do on sides toward the doors of the car). then use small pliers to grip and pull the same side of the spring off the rod. once off outer rod, use pliers to remove from inner rod. this will bend the springs some. I think they could with some effort be reattached if you ever really wanted (I dont). also slide off white plastic rod covers.

(5) secure mounts:
all that remains is the rod for the springs and the plastic connecting mount (that attached to the deflector and pivots on the rod). I could not figure out how to safely remove these as the rod is tucked up under the lip of the body sheet metal. the roof now will open/close perfectly. but, since there might be some small chance of the mounts flipping up in the wind (no longer spring loaded but loose on the rods) and blocking the roof from closing, I just duct-taped them down to the water drain floor area. I will check on the tape in a few months to make sure it's OK. the drains are located way in the corners far away from the tape. and for asthetics while open from outside looking down, I may switch to black tape!

hope this helps someone else. I now have a spare arm completely intact as well as the deflector itself. the driver side arm is the good one. I may sell or give away at some later point once I am convinced all is well with my mod.
