with Mobil 1 0W-40, there is a huge reserve on mileage. Other cars (e.g. Saab 9-3) have their oil change interval recommended (from manufacturer) at about 20-30 thousand miles! I am sure with an oil change every 3-5k miles, you are just wasting money and (sorry if I sound too "greenpeace-like") helping to deplete our world's resources faster. It is safe to change a full synthetic oil of the quality of M1 0w-40 (even with short distance driving) at least double the interval recommended for "mineral oils" (e.g. 6-10k miles instead of 3-5k miles). Especially on European cars, they are built that way.
I personally use from the very first moment on my 9-5 only full synthetic oils (preferably MObil1) and change regularly at 10k km (about 6500 miles). I have now 100+ k miles on the engine with no problem at all, i.e., no sludge, clean, reliable starts (I use exclusively Chevron 94 octane). I plan to keep the car till about 200k miles (or 300,000 km).
just my 2 cents
