Years will certainly take a toll on the belt as well and 5 years intervals used to be the norm but now, many car makers are using 10 years instead.
On a Saab it is less important since the belt is fauirly sturdy but if you have a 99 and up Volvo, the belts installed from factory will NOT hold up for 10 years since they start to show cracks after about 4 years in service.
How many miles do you drive per year and when do you expect to reach 60K?
I had one 99 9-5 where the tensioner pulley gave way at 47K miles. Luckily, the belt didn't jump to cause damage.
The 2002 have the latest and greatest configuration of the tensioner bracket and I don't know if that makes them more or less prone to failures. But it seems that we read less about failures on newer V6 engines.
