Pulled into a service station today after highway driving for about two hours. The car was driving just fine. Started up the car after a ten minute break and the tachometer shot up to 4000RPM and stayed there. Turned off the ignition, let it sit for a while, and started it back up. Same thing happened again, but this time the car completely shut itself down. (Protection mode!) I figured that the gas-pedal might have gotten stuck, so I pumped it a couple of times and re-started the car. The engine gurgled up with a prolonged hesitation, though it remained at idle-speed this time. However, the CEL light came on and remained on. Rolled the car over to the adjoining garage where a mechanic was actually present. Had all the fluids checked, but was unable to diagnose what had happened or how to disable the CEL. The rear part of the exhaust also suddenly developed a loud resonance, like a sustained low frequency synth sound.
I decided to take a chance and get back on the highway to drive the 30miles or so home. The car drove just fine, except for the exhaust grunt. Engine and transmission felt as good as ever; no problem shifting, all the fluid levels unchanged, and same gas mileage. FYI,I just had oil&filter change last Friday.
Any idea what exactly happened? I'm in Toronto right now, so I don't think I can take the car to a dealer-ship until the 27th (26th being Boxing day). Also, I'm wondering if the US CPO warranty extends to Canada should the car needs major work. I don't know if I want to drive back to Boston with the CEL on to get it checked out.
Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all-
