You should get the alternator checked. dimming lights etc as you describe can be a sign a failing voltage regulator or a weak alternator. But an undersized battery (e.g. your lawn tractor battery) could also be causing that symptom. (did it happen with the old battery before it failed?)
the whining and whirring you describe, if mechanical, could be a failing alternator bearing, although it could be the bearing on any of the accessories or idlers.
The VR can be replaced in the these alternators, which would be quite a bit less expensive, esp if you DIY. I doubt that the dealer would replace just the VR though.
my 2 cents:
- get the pro-rated battery from the dealer. & get the alternator checked.
- trust midas? well it really depends on your particular midas shop, and the guy doing the work. Midas shops run the gamut from brilliant techs to hacks. Usually the really good guys move on to better paying shops.
