Toyota and Honda can't possibly survive on merely selling good to high quality reliable cars. The economics simply don't work. So they have to make money on parts and service. This has always been the case. You may have fewer repairs, but the costs for them are higher.
This brings to mind a study from 25 years ago when I worked for Volkswagen. We did a parts & service cost commparison to Honda, Toyota, Mazda, etc. We looked at common replacement parts like exhaust, alternators, brakes, filters, etc. In nearly every case the Japanese cars were more expensive, usually by a significant margin. Including service, the VWs were still less expensive to own.
Of course back then VW had other issues that pissed off a lot of customers, but the point here is that Japanese cars have never truly been cheap to keep.
