Hi all,
Yesterday, after driving continuously about five hours (highway speeds), my Check Engine Light (CEL) came on. After pulling over and verifying my fluid levels were okay, I continued on my journey as there wasn't much I could do about it and the car was driving fine.
Today I went into an AutoZone who used their OBDII reader to read the error code: It was P0420, which from reading saabnet and online, tells me the O2 sensor following the cat is returning a bad reading.
Is this as simple as replacing the cat or are their simpler, cheap, steps to take before that to rule out other issues?
Additional info:
1) I was driving the car using 89 octane as it was very cold up north and figured I could get away with it. Normally I use 93. Could this have caused the error? My tank is currently about 1/4 full. If I topped up with 93 could this help?
2) My DIC was last replaced, under warranty, in June '04 at 60K miles. The car had a CEL about a week earlier, but the dealership only upgraded the software at that time. A week later the car completely died on the road. Using my spare DIC, I drove into the dealer, swapped the bad DIC back in and they fixed it.
Would swapping my spare DIC in now, help clear this code, or do I need the OBDII machine to clear that?
Is there any way I can clear the check engine light, without this tool?
Thanks for advice,
Kevin
