Cause of bad fuel pump at 49k

I can only share with you that my mechanic (who knows me well) got on my butt for continuing to drive with 1/2 tank or less of gas. It's not my style to "fill her up" and drive. I always get $10-$15 dollars every X days. I am told when the gague is at 1/4 or less or often into the red zone, the fuel pump works harder. Now, that might be an old mechanic wise tail or you could have just had a bad fuel pump. I have always had over 100k on mine when they needed replacing.
